Ehlanzeni District Municipality became the best performers on 2017 Matric result in Mpumalanga Province.

The Executive Mayors both of Ehlanzeni District Municipality Cllr Jesta Sidell along with Cllr Selinah Mashigo - Segobela of Thaba Chweu local municipality were the most excited people to receive the good news from MEC for Education in Mpumalanga Ms Reginah Mohaule that the best performed Matric learner in the class of 2017 is from Ehlanzeni District Municiaplity and Thabachweu in particular. The announcement ceremony took place at the Word of Life Church in Leroro village on Friday 05 January 2018.

The event was graced by the oldest teacher Gogo Qwelane who is 94 years of age and taught for 74 year. She was the MEC’s guest of honour in the matric results announcements. Gogo Qwelane was honoured with the MEC special award for having taught for 74 and still teaching Geography at Metropolitan Private School in White River. The Executive Mayor Sidell said that, “I am so thrilled to lead a district municipality which has such committed teachers who have pulled all stops to make sure the learners in our district become the best of Mpumalanga matric student”.

She also said having shared the stage with Gogo Qwelane who is also the oldest teacher in the Republic and from within Ehlanzeni District Municipality is a blessing. She wished the learners who did well to proceed making our district so proud in their futhure studies

RURAL DEVELOPMENT AND LAND REFORM VISITED EDM

 

The Executive Mayor of Ehlanzeni District Municipality Cllr Jesta Sidell welcomed the Honorable Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform Mrs. Candith Mashego – Dlamini to the on Tuesday 12 September 2017. The meeting was motivated by the engagement that took place in East London where the Deputy Minister’s Department demonstrated and showcased what working together with Municipalities, civil society and traditional leaders can do in uplifting the lives of the poverty stricken people.

 

Executive Mayor Sidell indicated that she is humbled, honored and at the same time motivated that the visitor is not only known as a Deputy Minister but as sister, community leader with vast experience having served the people of the Mpumalanga Province in many capacities as a member of the Executive Council since the inception of the democratic dispensation in 1994.

 

She said that, “we are proud of you and we strongly believe that the Portfolio as Deputy Minister is just the beginning of better things to come not only for you but for the province as well as the entire country. You have won our hearts and minds through your visionary leadership, consistency in your character and commitment in championing the cause of the poor. We have developed a lot of trust in you and we know that you can buy leadership success with the trust that we give you. We are proud of you”.

 

She quoted Albert Einstein who once said, ‘insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results’ and ‘ no problem can be solved from the same consciousness  that created it’.

 

The officials brought by the Deputy Minister Mashego were senior officials who made presentations on the following topics: The revised CRDP system, one hector one house hold two dairy cows policy, One rural ward one integrated development centre over a ten year period, land rights management committee and turning SA into a construction site. Deputy Minister Mashego – Dlamini said that Integrated Socio Economic Development and Rural Economy Transformation at local level can only be attained when some of the processes are championed by District and local Municipality’s Executive Mayors with the support of National and Provincial Departments through coordination at the level of Districts and working with civil society.

 

She further indicated that most of the presentations sound very difficult from a distance but when you give much time to listen you will be able to understand that they are all structured to be possible and easy to uplift the lives of the rural citizens of South Africa.

The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Dr Zweli Mkhize, visited Mpumalanga Province for the Provincial Visit as part of his national programme to provide support to distressed and dysfunctional municipalities.

The Minister has met the provincial leadership led by the Premier, Ms Refilwe Mtshweni, MEC Speedy Mashilo and Eric Kholwane responsible for CoGTA, Local Government and Traditional Affairs and Finance, Economic Development and Tourism respectively.

The Minister met the mayors of distressed and dysfunctional municipalities in Mpumalanga with their respective districts. 

The following municipalities have been identified as distressed or dysfunctional in the province:

Thaba Chweu Local Municipality
Govan Mbeki Local Municipality
Lekwa Local Municipality
Emalahleni Local Municipality
Msukaligwa Local Municipality.

The challenges in affected Mpumalanga municipalities relate to governance and financial management, service delivery failures and also debts owed to Eskom and water boards.
